Saugus Business Partnership Provides Funds for Saugus Police Details in Cliftondale Square

Saugus, MA

The Saugus Business Partnership (SBP) again stepped up to the plate by providing funding for the Saugus Police details in Cliftondale Square. According to SBP Treasurer John Smolinsky, Chief Executive Officer of the Saugus Federal Credit Union, the police details were in the area during specific days and hours of the week, according to a schedule set by the Saugus Police Department.

According to Lieutenant Stephen Sweezey of the Saugus Police Department, the program was a great success and officers were instrumental in reducing speeding in the square, assisting pedestrians, and keeping the bus stops unoccupied. In addition, he commended the Saugus Business Partnership for its civic pride and community service.

The community should be proud to have an organization like the Saugus Business Partnership which has extended its own resources to provide public safety for the residents and businesses in the Cliftondale area, Lt. Sweezey said. We certainly appreciate their efforts.

This was another opportunity for the Saugus Business Partnership to lend a helping hand to the community, especially as municipal and state budgets get tighter, John Smolinsky added. The details further ensured the protection of Saugus residents and businesses, while alleviating some of the budgetary restrictions of the Saugus Police Department.

Four members of the Saugus business community created the Saugus Business Partnership (SBP) in 2003 to improve and enhance the quality of life in Saugus. The organization has donated over $25,000 to Saugus programs and services, including a $10,000 donation to the Saugus School Department to fund spring sports at Saugus High School for the spring 2003 season; a $4,500 donation to the Saugus High School band and chorus to fund a trip to Annapolis, Maryland; donations to four Saugus families during the holiday season; materials for the Saugus Public Library, including a miniature Lions Head from China to educate the community about the Chinese New Year; Kowloon's Restaurant gift certificates for the Mystery of the Library Detective; a $5,000 donation to the Saugus Cheerleaders trip to Florida; funding for the Saugus High School hockey team banquet at the Kowloon's Restaurant; co-sponsor of the World TaiChi & QiGong Day at the Saugus Public Library; co-sponsor of the National Library Month rewards coupon program; co-sponsor of Operation Saugus Cares drive for supplies to the troops in Iraq; and a $3,000 donation to the Saugus High School state championship hockey team for team jackets; in addition to its most recent donation to the Town of Saugus for the police details.

Membership in the SBP is open to all Saugus businesses and business owners who have the desire to make a difference in the lives of the residents, businesses, organizations and institutions in the community. Members pay an annual fee which assists the SBP in ensuring that local programs remain up and running.

The partnership is also committed to research, analyze and develop policy on issues affecting the economy in Saugus, and recently met the area legislators to voice the concerns of local restaurant owners who favor a statewide smoking ban to reinforce the bans in individual communities.
